A local man has enlisted a 100-strong team of family, friends and colleagues to take part in this year’s Galway marathon in aid of the Meningitis Trust.

National charity Meningitis Research Foundation is endeavouring to dispel a meningitis myth to raise awareness of the disease and help save lives this summer. Many people believe meningitis and septicaemia — the blood poisoning form of the disease — can only be contracted during the winter months, when people are more susceptible to illness, however these diseases can strike anyone, of any age, at any time.

Meningitis Research Foundation is launching The Book of Experience online at www.meningitis.org, which presents a unique picture of the way that meningitis and septicaemia have affected individuals, families, and whole communities in Ireland and the UK.

“Meningitis is more prevalent during the autumn/winter months and it can be a potentially fatal disease if it is untreated,” she said. “If the disease is diagnosed early and treated promptly, most people make a complete recovery
